BAYVIEW, Va. The waitlist is gone.

Osprey Point Community Services has launched same-day access, a new way into care that replaces the traditional intake waitlist. Anyone seeking mental health or substance use services can now call or walk into the Bayview Center before 10 a.m. on a weekday and complete a first appointment with a clinician that same day.

Under the old model, a first appointment could take two to three weeks. Research and plain experience agree on what happens in that gap: people lose momentum, symptoms deepen, and many never make it to the first visit.

“The moment someone decides to ask for help is precious, and it is perishable,” said Dr. Amara Fielding, executive director. “We rebuilt our front door so that decision meets an open appointment, not a callback list.”

How it works

  • Call (757) 555-0142 or walk into the Bayview Center at 410 Pelican Way, weekdays starting at 8 a.m.
  • A staff member completes a brief welcome conversation, about 20 minutes
  • You meet a clinician the same day for a full assessment and leave with a plan and a scheduled next appointment

The program holds appointment slots open every morning specifically for new arrivals. Afternoon arrivals are scheduled for the next weekday morning.

Early results

In its first month, the program completed 214 same-day assessments. The share of people who finished a first appointment after asking for help rose from 61 percent to 94 percent.

“Those numbers are people,” Fielding said. “A third of the folks who used to fall through the crack in our front step are now simply walking through the door.”

Same-day access will expand to the Marsh Creek and Saltgrass locations this fall.
